Marge Roten, of Granada Hills Presbyterian Church in Northridge, heads Inspiring Notes, a music education non-profit organization that gives in school concerts to thousands of area children every year. The theme of this special family concert at the church was “diversity”. It began with a troupe of young girls dancing in costume to four songs of folkloric Mexican music.
Our one hour set of authentic tango and Latin jazz featured two youthful guest soloists: SYNTHESIS Young Artist, baritone Caleb Robbins sang jazz and CSUN saxophone major Sean Harrison, an African American helped out with Latin jazz and a tight arrangement of a work by Artor Piazzolla. TANGOTICO, the tango and Latin jazz quartet, boasts a range of backgrounds. Guitarist Ian Charlie hearkens from East Borneo, Malaysia, violinist Alan Busteed grew up in farm country in Ohio, bandleader and pianist Matias Piegari is from Buenos Aires, and Dominic Martinez, bassist, is East Coast native, with a catalogue of urban experience in Latin and American popular music styles.
